Guild Wars Error=058 Fix

Sep202006 6:19AM — John

With the weekend Nightfall preview event coming up on the 22nd of September, many people are installing the Guild Wars client for the first time, just as I did. Hopefully your install went smoothly, but if your install is like mine, you’ll be getting an Error=058 message when you try to enter your weekend event or retail product key.

The page they provide is very helpful but they don’t always work, sometimes it has nothing to do with your network connection setting at all. This is what worked for me, and hopefully they’ll work for you. It’s a simple fix, but will require you to “restream? the Guild Wars data again.

Step 1: Make sure there are no instances of Guild Wars (Gw.exe) running
Step 2: Rename the file Gw.dat to Gw.old in your Guild Wars directory.
Step 3: Run Guild Wars (Gw.exe).

That fixed my problem, but it might not fix yours, so I’ve also included a guide below to help you asses where the problem is occurring and what steps to take to receive support.

First thing we need to do is see what kind of network issue you’re having. You can do this by going to start Start then clicking on run Run, and then typing cmd to open the command prompt. Once there you need to navigate to the Guild Wars install directory, you can do this by typing cd and then the directory of your Guild Wars install in quotes, by default this will be cd "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars".

Once there we need to run the Guild Wars diagnostic tool by typing Gw.exe –diag, this will output a file called NetworkDiag.log in your Guild Wars install directory. To make sure you’re able to connect to the Guild Wars servers, you need to open NetworkDiag.log with a text editor, then find the “= Checking server connectivity? section. There you will see a list of servers with either “connect succeeded? or “connect failed? by them.

If you’re showing a large number of “connect failed? messages, or you’re showing all “connect succeeded? messages but you’re still unable to connect, you should contact Guild Wars support. You can do this by going to this web page, filling out your information and attaching your NetworkDiag.log file. They should get back to you within 24 hours.

I suddenly got this 058 error after defraging my system ,and getting a report that it could not defrag the gw.dat file. So I delete it (have done it before). I began to reinstall and rebuild Guild Wars. This is when I ran into the trouble. NONE OF THAT WAS THE TROUBLE.
The trouble it seems is that in the time I hadn’t logged on, I HAD updated my PEER GUARDIAN 2 lists… and it just so happens that NC INTERACTIVE, INC. was being blocked by PG2. I tried going in to the PG2 List Manager (P2P list) and ALLOW PERMANANTLY, and it appeared to take. Though as soon as I tried to boot GW, I couldsee PG2 logging that it was still blocking NC INTERACTIVE, INC (GW). So I jsut turned off PG2, and voila! GW booted and connected fine.
I hope this helps someone else out there that may have the same trouble. And will be asking Peer Guardian why their allow option gives a false allow.

I tried launching Guild Wars for the first time in 2007 and got that 058 error, unable to connect to servers -while trying to log in. It seems that the trouble was caused by PeerGuardian software that blocked the connection attempts. There were a lot blocked attempts to “NC INTERACTIVE, INC” so I manually allowed connections by using Peerguardian’s menus.

Try shutting down PeerGuardian and then log in again.

If that worked and you still want to use PG, you could also manually permanently allow the ranges that are named “NC INTERACTIVE, INC” - I had more than 1 range with that name in the constantly updating P2P list.
